Welcome
International Service
The International Service Committee (International) is one of the standing service committees of the Carbondale Rotary Club. International is a committee of interested Club members, acting under the direction of its Committee Chair(s). Currently, the co-chairs of the International Committee are Ann Harris and Tim Whitsitt. The Committee reports to the Board of Directors of the Carbondale Rotary Club.
The International is responsible for the Club's participation in Rotary International World Community Service. The Committee does so through budgeted funds annually through the Club's Board of Directors. The focus of International is on Rotarians making a difference in the world through global projects primarily beyond our national borders; helping needy and third world communities to advance educational, economically, and in health with fresh water, schools, and a better environment. This includes service project identification, evaluation, participation, and coordination of funding through The Rotary Foundation.
The projects which the International Committee supports with funding annually often also provide Club members with personal service opportunities around the United States and internationally. Each year, the Committee undertakes a review of possible global grant projects available for funding, as well as other international disaster relief and infrastructure support projects in underdeveloped communities worldwide. From that review, the Committee will select the projects which it deems appropriate for receipt of our local Club's charitable funding.
How Funding Works:
Funding from our Club is based upon the determination of the International Committee selecting the various projects which are deemed appropriate for funding at levels which will be within the international giving budget for the Carbondale Rotary established each Rotary fiscal year. Typically, the committee will look first to "Global Grants" which are projects approved through Rotary International and involve the participation of the Rotary Foundation, as well as a good number of individual clubs around the world and specifically in the countries and regions where the charitable work will take place.
Our dollars are used for global grants or direct donations to support international activities with sustainable measurable outcomes. A global grant requires a minimum of one rotary club partnering with a rotary club in another country and must align with one of Rotary’s area of focus.
Current Funding Projects and Amounts for 2024/25:
- RAM – Global ($2500.00) – This is a malaria intervention project under a Rotary Global Grant which started in Kenya and is broadening its reach to multiple countries in Africa.
- Tanzanian Tooth Fairy ($2,500.00) — This is essentially a one-person project which has operated in the bush country of Tanzania in Africa. The single person is Glenwood Springs native Annie Zancanella, who has been travelling to this area for over five years, providing primarily basic dental services to villages in the bush. This is the second year in which Carbondale Rotary has provided both dental supplies and equipment, as well as funding for her use.
- Guatamala Literacy Project ($1,000.00) — This is a multi-Club supported Global Grant project supporting youth in Guatemala in achieving high school education. Carbondale has supported GLP for a number of years and in 2024 has provided a $1,000.00 individual scholarship grant to one of GLP's beneficiary students.
Past Funding Projects by Year:
2023 — Guatemala Literacy Project, RAM-Global, Shelter Box
2016 — Farmers of the Future Global Grant (multi-year) Supporting development of sustainable agriculture in remote villages in Niger, Africa
